On Friday, 10 May 2019, Yangon staff from ADRA Myanmar participated in Gender Equality training conducted by Gender Specialist Diana Opollo from ADRA Canada.
The training was heavily based on group activities and discussion on key topics including; Gender Equality Concepts, Gender Mainstreaming, GBV Gender Based Violence, and SEA Sexual Exploitation and Abuse.
Staff were often split into male and female groups to discuss perspectives and rejoin together to discuss the differences. One activity included writing the differences in gender roles between men and women during a typical day between 5am to midnight in urban and rural households. Groups also had to create problem trees for Gender Based Violence and outline the consequences for different groups in regards to Sexual Exploitation and Violence.
Staff were encouraged to think and discuss how to implement gender equality within the organisation and projects that we deliver to beneficiaries. ADRA Myanmar has already assigned Brenda Britton, M&E Coordinator to act as the Gender Focal Point with Gender Officer positions being recruited for specific projects.
Field staff have already received Gender training and there will be refresher trainings over the coming years. Participating staff were awarded with a certificate of completion.
